What does it take to sell dental supplies in Egypt?

  1. Have the certificates ready

CE (MDR) Class IIa for fillings, crowns and alloys or Class IIb for implants, ISO 13485:2016, a Declaration of Conformity and a Free Sale Certificate; for implants, sterilisation validation and ISO 10993 biocompatibility. On the US route, an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government with the 510(k).

  2. Legalise them if you are outside the reference countries

A Free Sale Certificate from a non-reference country is legalised by the Chamber of Commerce and the Egyptian embassy.

  3. Pass the dental scientific committee

Every dental tariff line needs the prior approval of the EDA-accredited dental committee. Class IIb implants from non-reference countries go to a scientific committee whose approval runs one year before a hospital survey.

  4. Register sterile items, approve the rest

Sterile implants, abutments and bone grafts are registered before release; non-sterile materials enter on EDA import approvals.

  5. Plan for annual sampling

Adhesives, amalgam capsules, files, burs and other named items are sampled from the incoming shipment every year and tested before the import approval is issued.

  6. Ship from origin and sell

Implants and dental fittings ship from the country of origin or the producer's main centres. Buyers are private dental clinics, centres and labs, faculties of dentistry and public hospitals through UPA.

Who buys dental supplies in Egypt?

  • Private dental clinics, dental centres and dental labs. Dental labs need a Ministry of Health licence to import directly.
  • University faculties of dentistry, buying by tender.
  • Public hospitals, university hospitals and Health Insurance, through UPA tripartite contracts: the Unified Procurement Authority issues the purchase order and the requesting entity pays.

Why are dental materials sampled every year?

EDA's import guideline names adhesives, amalgam capsules, files and burs — and any item the dental committee adds — for annual sampling from the incoming shipment, analysed at an EDA-accredited agency before the import approval is issued (EDA import guideline). That hold comes back every year, so stock and shelf life are planned around it.

How do dental implants from Korea, China or Turkey get approved?

Dental implants are Class IIb. From a non-reference country they go to a specialised EDA scientific committee; its approval runs one year, then EDA's safety department surveys the hospitals supplied before re-evaluating it. Implants from reference countries avoid that committee — see EDA reference countries.
