Selling dental equipment in Egypt: a distributor and importer for manufacturers

Last verified:

Dental equipment — drill engines, handpieces, dental chairs and units, dental X-ray and CBCT, sterilisers — pays 5% import duty in Egypt, or 0% for EU, UK, EFTA and Turkish goods with proof of origin (Egyptian Customs tariff). On top of the EDA import approval, every dental line needs the prior approval of an EDA-accredited dental scientific committee, the importer's EDA register must carry a licensed maintenance centre, and dental X-ray and CT are not released without the Executive Office for Radiation Protection (EDA medical-equipment guideline). Egypt imported US$16.65 million of dental instruments and appliances (HS 9018.49) in 2024, led by China (US$5.68M) and Germany (US$5.24M) (World Bank WITS).

What does it take to sell dental equipment in Egypt?

  1. Have the certificates ready

CE (MDR) — Class I chairs and units, Class IIa handpieces, Class IIb dental X-ray — plus ISO 13485:2016, a Declaration of Conformity and a Free Sale Certificate. An IEC 60601-1 electrical safety report is common in the technical file. On the US route, an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government with the 510(k).

  2. Legalise them if you are outside the reference countries

A Free Sale Certificate from a non-reference country is legalised; autoclaves from a non-reference country need a Free Sale Certificate from a reference country.

  3. Get onto a local importer's EDA register

The register must list your company as supplier or manufacturer and carry a valid licensed maintenance centre.

  4. Pass the dental committee with the right evidence

Prior approval of the EDA-accredited dental scientific committee on every dental line, proof of the anti-retraction valve on dental units, autoclavable handpieces, and accessories itemised on the invoice to match the catalogue.

  5. Clear X-ray equipment for radiation protection

Dental X-ray and CBCT also need a release approval from the Executive Office for Radiation Protection. All equipment must be new and unused.

  6. Sell to dental buyers

Private dental clinics and centres, university faculties of dentistry and their hospitals, public hospitals through UPA, and private hospital groups.

Who buys dental equipment in Egypt?

  • Private dental clinics and dental centres.
  • University faculties of dentistry and their hospitals, buying by tender.
  • Public hospitals, university hospitals and Health Insurance, through UPA tripartite contracts: the Unified Procurement Authority issues the purchase order and the requesting entity pays.
  • Private hospital groups and private hospitals.

What is the dental scientific committee approval?

Egypt's customs tariff marks every dental line — drill engines, dental instruments, dental chairs and furniture, dental X-ray and dental CT — with a rule requiring the prior approval of a specialised dental scientific committee accredited by EDA (Egyptian Customs tariff). It sits on top of the normal EDA import approval, so a dental file has one more gate than most equipment. For dental X-ray and CBCT there is a third: the Executive Office for Radiation Protection must approve the release.

Why does the maintenance centre matter?

Because EDA will not issue import approvals for medical equipment unless the importer's register carries a valid licensed maintenance centre, and if that licence lapses imports stop after a two-month grace period (EDA medical-equipment guideline). After-sales service is part of the entry plan from day one, not an afterthought.
