How do you export medical devices to Egypt?
Last verified:
Exporting medical devices to Egypt follows a fixed order: an Egyptian importer on the Importers Register, an EDA registration for the product (4–9 months), an EDA import approval before each shipment (reply in 2 working days), an ACID number with documents uploaded via CargoX 48 hours before arrival, and customs clearance where duty and VAT are paid. Duty is 0% for EU, EFTA, UK and Turkish goods with origin proof and 0–10% otherwise (5% on many device and reagent lines); VAT is 14%, or 5% for devices used to provide a service since 29 July 2026. The Egyptian importer, not the foreign exporter, files every Egyptian step.

How does payment from Egypt work?
Egyptian banks pay imports against the supplier's invoice, the customs release and a bank-issued Form 4 (FIDI customs guide). In 2022 the Central Bank briefly required letters of credit for most imports; that rule was cancelled on 29 December 2022 and documentary collections are allowed again (Egypt Today). On the UltraTeb Market Access model we import under a documentary collection, and the agreement makes payment due when your goods sell — see sell-through, explained.
Can I export to Egypt without an Egyptian partner?
Not for medical devices sold in Egypt: EDA registration, import approvals, the ACID and the customs declaration are all in the name of a licensed Egyptian importer. A foreign company can now own an importing company (for up to 10 years in total under Law 173 of 2023), but it still needs the Egyptian company, its licences and its staff.
“Exporting to Egypt is a sequence, not a checklist: each approval unlocks the next, so the order matters more than speed at any single step.” — Mohamed Dabees, founder, UltraTeb
UltraTeb Market Access is a zero-upfront-fee route into Egypt's medical market: UltraTeb registers, imports, markets, stores and sells your product, shares the risk, and pays you when it sells.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to start exporting medical devices to Egypt?
The EDA registration is usually the longest step: 4–9 months by class (trade.gov). Import approvals (2 working days) and the ACID (48 hours) are quick once the product is registered.
Do I need an Egyptian importer?
Yes. EDA filings, the ACID and the customs declaration are in the name of a licensed Egyptian importer.
What customs duty applies?
0% for EU, EFTA, UK and Turkish goods with valid origin proof; otherwise 0–10% MFN by tariff line (5% on many device and reagent lines). See import duties and VAT.
What VAT applies to medical devices in Egypt?
14% standard; 5% since 29 July 2026 for medical devices used to produce goods or provide services (Law 149 of 2026). Whether consumables qualify is not settled.
What is Form 4?
A bank-issued import form confirming the import is paid through an Egyptian bank; customs requires it for commercial imports.
Which Incoterm should I use?
Any agreed term works, but customs values the goods at CIF. Agree who arranges freight and insurance in the contract.
Can I ship samples first?
Only scientific offices may import promotional samples; importers may import up to 10 evaluation samples per code, once. Plan demo stock through a normal import approval.
What if the goods don't sell?
Duty and taxes on goods lacking similar local products are refunded if they are re-exported in kind within 1 year of payment (Customs Law Art. 37). Plan return deadlines inside that year.
