Questions & answers

What is the difference between ReadyVac, PortoVac, and EgyVac?

All three are trade names for the VACUGMS closed wound suction drain by GMS, and may refer to slight size or design variants within the same product family.

What is the difference between 14 Fr, 16 Fr, and 18 Fr, and how do I choose?

The number refers to the French (Fr) gauge of the drain tube. The 18 Fr is the widest with the greatest drainage capacity, suitable for higher fluid-output procedures; 16 Fr is intermediate; and 14 Fr is most appropriate where a smaller diameter is needed. The surgeon selects the correct size based on the procedure.

Is this drain single-use or can it be re-sterilised?

It is a single-use device, supplied sterile, and must not be re-sterilised or reused.

In which surgical specialties is the ReadyVac / PortoVac / EgyVac GMS drain used?

Used in orthopaedic, spinal, urological, general, and plastic surgery — wherever post-operative closed suction drainage of fluids is required.
